Stay Healthy: 5 Tips to Ensure A Germ Free Car Interior

Updated: Jun 18, 2020

Did you know that about 700 different types of germs can develop in your vehicle in the absence of proper and regular cleaning hygiene? Here is a collection of our top tips to clean and disinfect your car to ensure that it provides a clean and safe environment for you and your loved ones to enjoy those long drives.

Alcohol-based Wet Wipes Work Great

Use hand sanitizing wet wipes that contain alcohol and clean out the vehicle interiors. You can get these at your local pharmacy. Alternatively, you can soak a clean cloth in an alcohol-based sanitizer, isopropyl alcohol, or rubbing alcohol (if available) and use it for cleaning the interior surfaces.

Let it sit on the surface for about 20 seconds and wipe off with a clean, damp microfiber towel.

Door knobs, steering wheel, instrument panel, hand-brake lever, seat belt, rear-view mirrors, gear shifter, wiper/ headlight/ turn signal controls, armrests, seat adjusters, and the car seats are key hotspots, so pay extra attention to these.

Ensure the product you use does not contain bleach or ammonia as that could end up damaging the surfaces and electronic components.

Clean the Air Conditioning Vents

Due to moisture that tends to accumulate, air conditioning vents and filters need periodic cleaning. Your local mechanic or service station will be able to help.

If you would like to do it yourself, the air-conditioner filter is generally located behind the glove-box and there are several resources on the internet that can guide you through the steps you need to follow, depending on your specific car make and model.

For the A/C vents itself, you can use a car interior cleaner or degreaser. Spray it over the bristles of a soft detailing brush or a thick paintbrush and use it to clean off the dust and other surface contaminants. Wipe gently using a clean microfiber towel.

Steam cleaning of the vents is also a great alternative, so reach out to your local detailer to evaluate options.

Vacuum The Interiors Periodically

Food crumbs left in the vehicle can attract all sorts of uninvited visitors into your vehicle, so it's important to get rid of these regularly. A vacuum cleaner with the right attachments can do wonders to rid your vehicle of these as well as the bacteria and resultant odours from hard to reach areas of your vehicle interiors

Aerate The Car Well After Cleaning And Sanitization

Once you have cleaned the car interiors, it's bound to be a bit damp therefore you need to give the passenger compartment some air and sunlight. Thoroughly airing your car after you clean it is very beneficial.

Ensure The Car Wash Staff Follow Sanitization Hygiene

It is important to make sure that people cleaning your vehicle, maintain strict hygiene, and follow safety protocols. Gloves and masks should be used at all times. They must sanitize their hands before washing your car, to prevent any cross-contamination and spread of germs.
